Online Meditation Session
Mindfulness Meditation & Eco-Dharma Sessions
Join us for guided online mindfulness meditation, accessible from anywhere in Australia. These sessions are designed to cultivate clarity, calm, and a deep sense of interconnection. Each gathering begins with a Dharmette—a short contemplative talk—followed by seated practice and guided inquiry into Eco-Dharma teachings, providing a practical framework for navigating the complexities of our modern world.
Upcoming Session: May 25th | 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm (AEST)
Location: Join via Zoom. (I encourage participants to take their device outdoors, weather permitting, to practice in natural light or fresh air).
Teacher: Marion Miller (www.marionmiller.com.au)
Theme: The heart is an ecology.
Please bring a journal for your reflections.
Investment: The session is offered freely (dana is welcome).
Integrating Ancient Wisdom with Modern Life
While mindfulness has become widely recognised through contemporary programs like MBSR, its roots are deeply embedded in the 2,600-year-old Vipassanā (Insight Meditation) tradition. As a MBSR teacher and a trainee Dharma teacher with the Insight Meditation Institute (IMI), my work bridges these traditional roots with contemporary life.
This practice group focuses on Engaged Mindfulness and Eco-Dharma. We believe that life itself is the practice. By drawing on ancient philosophy, we can foster an ethical approach to sustainable living that is deeply connected to the natural world. These sessions are open to all; you do not need to identify as a Buddhist to participate. The invitation is simply to be curious and to explore the nature of reality for yourself.
Understanding Eco-Dharma
Eco-Dharma is a contemporary path that bridges the wisdom of the Dharma with ecological consciousness. It offers us a way to respond to environmental challenges, such as climate anxiety, with integrity and heart.
-
Interbeing: Recognising that nothing exists in isolation. Through the lens of the Diamond Sutra, we explore how human existence is inseparable from the "non-human" elements of sunlight, soil, and water.
-
Healing the Dualism: By working with the Brahma-viharas (Loving-kindness, Compassion, Appreciative Joy, and Equanimity), we soften the boundary between the internal "self" and the natural world, allowing compassion to become a natural response to the Earth.
-
Wise Action: We apply the 8-Fold Path to our environmental reality. This includes "Bearing Witness" to ecological grief with an open heart and practicing "Non-attachment to Results," allowing us to act with integrity rather than being paralysed by the need for specific outcomes.
-
Simplicity & Restraint: Moving away from the "hustle culture" of extractive growth. By internalising the truth of Impermanence, we find contentment in "enough" and cultivate a lifestyle of reciprocity with the land.
What is Dana?
In the context of the Buddhist tradition, dāna is the foundational practice of generosity, the intentional, non-attached act of giving or offering that cultivates a heart of abundance and diminishes the grasping nature of the ego. In the insight Meditation tradition we offer these teachings freely and encourage dana as a generosity practice to support the Dharma's continuation. The dana I receive goes directly to environmental and social projects conducted at The Eco Retreat.
Community & Continued Study
I am deeply committed to supporting the broader Australian meditation community. I currently serve on the committee for the Insight Meditation Institute (IMI), which provides high-quality training and retreats.
For those looking for a local peer network, I am a collaborator with The Eco Retreat—a growing community of makers, growers, and seekers. They host a shared WhatsApp group for ongoing conversations, resource sharing, and community-led events. You can connect with that network to supplement your individual practice with community-based engagement.
For further recommendations, I encourage exploring the offerings of the Insight Meditation Australia, Melbourne Insight Meditation group, Sangsura Retreats, Gaia House, and Spirit Rock.
